Thomas R. McPhee spent more than six months designing and carving the Emerald Crystal from the famous Muzo Mine in Colombia. The main body of the stone is carved in high relief and contains intertwined figures representing the various aspects of the artist’s vision.
The Emerald is named for the indigenous woman named Catalina who played a pivotal role in early Native-European relations.
Crown adorned with over 40 carats of diamonds cast in 18Kt yellow gold.
Intarsia base was created by Lapidary Artist Nicolai Medvedev using Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, Gold-veined Quartz, and Sugilite.
Intaglio seal carving on the base of the Emerald represents the unified ethos of both Europe and The Americas.
The Emerald crystal originally weighing 2,010 carats, mined in the renowned Colombian Muzo Region is one of the largest fine-gem Emerald crystals ever found in the world.
The emerald carving's final weight is 1,550 carats featuring nine images that reference the 500th Anniversary of the European arrival in the Americas. Total approximate height of the statue including feet on base to top of crown is 63.6 cm (25").
